Referring to my public despatch No. 205 of this day's date I shall be glad if you will report to me whether Dr Eitel is nearly of pensionable age, whether, if this is the case, he should be called upon to retire, whether, if he retires, it would be advisable again to combine the duties of Head Master of the College and Inspector of Schools, whether Dr Wright would adequately perform the combined duties or whether on the contrary his services also might with advantage be dispensed with if a favourable opportunity offers.

2. I must confess that Dr Wright appears to me to have at least as much to say for himself as Dr Eitel and, these papers seem to indicate that he has been placed in an impossible position, I should have been glad to have
